Neural Computing

Neural Computing by R Beale and T Jackson

To those new to artificial intelligence (AI) I go back to my very first book on the subject given to me at University of Reading by my good friend Daniel Mok.

Neural-Computing-Introduction-R-Beale

The book is rather pricey at the moment with the soft back at £57 and the hardback at £175, as AI has really taken off. It was only £22 back then!

In this article I will attempt to introduce the concepts in the book in the simplest fashion available and provide examples where and when appropriate.

Please comment for your insights and more.

The book explains the very basics of the mathematics of neural networks (NN). NN are derived from how the human brain works. Used in many classification problems such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR). OCR is used for example in:

OCR deduces what characters are in the photo. For example with Apple’s iPhones “Live text” you can then select the characters on screen and copy them and translate them.
